Chapter Seven

After yet another sleepless night, Noura gave up at two a.m. and switched on the lights. Her bed sheets were more rumpled than usual from her rolling around, running away from thoughts of Bewaji as well as from Fatoki’s words.

She really thought that staying away from her would make these urges go away. Work helped in distracting her, and she had pushed through with the website and was set to have everything finished before the deadline. Spending time with her sisters and her mother also helped, but when she ended up alone as was inevitable, Bewaji’s absence slammed into her. She missed the constant messages on her phone; she missed the late-night calls before bed, and she missed the photos Bewaji sent documenting the progress of her mural.

She longed for the laughter, for more kisses and caresses. She longed to hear Bewaji moan her name. It disturbed her that she might never again feel the incredible softness of her lips against hers. No one else could make goose bumps pop up the length of her arms the way they erupted when Bewaji placed a hand on her waist. She easily melted into hot lava recalling the way the woman kissed her neck, her cool breath in her ear as she sucked on her earlobe. Just below her ribcage, on the left side, was an unbearable hurt. She had not been able to sleep properly since she’d shoved Bewaji out of her life. Each night, she would lie in bed anxious with the lights off, tossing and turning. She could never shake the fact that an important chunk of her life was missing.

Is this what it feels like to be in love with a girl? she asked herself, then summarily erased that notion.

She lay curled on her side, her heart pounding erratically while she stared at Bewaji’s number on her phone screen. The numbers danced before her eyes, taunting her to make the call. Instead, she looked through her instant messages. She had read through their conversation twenty times—from the very first hello she scrolled down through the daily ‘how are you’ to the final messages that were all from Bewaji’s side.

‘Hi I have been trying to reach you, is everything alright?’ Bewaji wrote five days ago.

‘Are you avoiding me?’ That came hours later.

‘Did I do something wrong? Talk to me Noura, please’ That came the next day.

She should not be thinking about Bewaji this much. It did not make sense that she missed her so deeply, unless she had already fallen in love with her.

She whacked that thought away with all her might. She wrestled within herself, and it affected her physically. Worse, her period had come along and made her even more moody. There were bags under her eyes, and her features seemed gaunter. Undoubtedly, people around her noticed. About a week had passed since the beach party, and not seeing or communicating with Bewaji had felt like being dragged through Hell.

In the early hours of that morning, she tried to watch a movie on her laptop and gave up when the light hurt her tired eyes.
